Fiona secures her future

It wasn’t that long ago that Fiona had a full time job working in a call centre. Unfortunately, losing several family members had sent Fiona in a spiralling depression. She’d lost all motivation, eventually losing her job and even having downsizing from her house into a flat.

But, after seeing a leaflet for New Leaf in the JobCentre, Fiona finally saw a glimmer of hope. After being paired with her mentor, Lewis from the New Leaf team at Cheshire West and Chester Council, the task was set to improve Fiona’s motivation and confidence.

To help Fiona to manage her debts she was put in contact with New Leaf Advice Worker, Sue Stoneley from Weaver Vale Housing Trust, as well as counselling sessions and courses on confidence, so she could begin to understand her thoughts and feelings. On top of this, Fiona was able to retrain to do a job she’d always wanted to try out – working in security. For this, she needed a SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence, which New Leaf were able to fund for her.

Fiona said:

I now have improved confidence and feel I can take on the world. I have changed my career path with improved skills and qualifications which, in turn, has led to employment.

The support I’ve received from New Leaf is phenomenal. I was a jibbering wreck when I started, I couldn’t say a sentence without crying. Now I’ve completed several courses and I’m a different person.

I’ve started to feel more positive about life. I’m really looking forward to starting work and my goal is to purchase a car to enable me to work further afield and visit my daughter and grandson more.

Her New Leaf mentor, Lewis, said:

Fiona is an absolute credit to work with. To see where she started, to what she has now achieved, it’s remarkable, especially as she’s getting into a predominantly male-orientated career. Fi has shown character and determination to achieve her goals. I’m very proud of her.
