Tom goes from despair to repair in his new role as a volunteer

Tom had previously been a pub landlord but was now living in a recovery home in Warrington, trying to beat his addictions. Tom was unemployed and not sure what the future had in store for him.

This was until one day during lockdown Tom decided to ask in his local charity shops to see if he could get any volunteering work. He met Lisa, Volunteer Officer from Warrington Voluntary Action, who listened to him about his life, his hopes and aspirations and recommended the New Leaf Programme. Soon after this Tom signed up and started volunteering at the Weee Charity, a computer and electrical recycling project.

Since starting on New Leaf Tom’s confidence has grown, he’s made friends, has learnt to trust people, learnt new skills and his whole outlook on life has changed.

Tom has received 1-2-1 support from his mentor, money advice and has completed several courses including First Responder – First Aid, IT and jobs skills.

Tom says:

“I hit rock bottom; I couldn’t see any way up until New Leaf gave me a ladder. I climbed my way out of a dark situation. New Leaf gave me the tools and confidence to re-start my life. I am going to make a new life in Warrington. I am going to continue to volunteer for such an amazing charity. Thank you, New Leaf”.

Tom feels that that the caring support from New Leaf and the fact that everybody on the New Leaf programme believed in him has made the difference to him getting on the right path in order to help change his life.

 Tom says:

“New Leaf has changed my life.  People believed in me and I was accepted as an individual not an addict.  Lisa set up my volunteering and supported me every week.  She believed in me, so I then began to believe in myself.  I have loved the experience and I am looking to continue with New Leaf until I reached my goal of sustainable employment. I’ve gone from despair to repair”

Tom continues to volunteer at the Weee Charity and loves every minute and wants to get as much experience and qualifications as he possibly can. His future goals are to continue to sustain his recovery and develop a career in IT.

If you have been inspired by Tom’s story and would like our help and support , then why not sign up to New Leaf  today .

New Leaf can also help get you on the right path to a brighter future.
